When are families available for adoption on the website?
Family information will be available in mid-October. If you would like to be notified when the information is available online, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Where do you get your families?
All families who apply for assistance through Families First’s Adopt-A-Family program are enrolled in or affiliated with our programs throughout the metro-Atlanta community. This includes families that were previously homeless, teen mothers, youth that have aged out of foster care, etc.
These families are living at our below the poverty level or face economic challenges on a daily basis. Read more about our programs here.
Can we meet the family we have adopted for the holidays?
This is on a case by case basis and can be discussed with our Volunteer Coordinator once you have adopted a family. Unfortunately, youth in foster care are not able to meet with Adopt-A-Family sponsors.
Do we have to adopt a family for both Thanksgiving and the December holidays?
No. You can choose to adopt a family for just one holiday.
What happens once I adopt a family?
Once you have selected a family and entered your information, you will receive an email with the family details including their needs and wish list.
Can we get the clothing sizes for our family?
The clothing sizes for each family member will be included in the email that is sent to you immediately after you make your selection to adopt your family. If you adopt more than one family, the information for each family will be on a spreadsheet attached to that confirmation email.
How much should we get for our family for Thanksgiving? And what do you accept?
We recommend using the guideline of $50 per family of 2, $100 for a family of 4, $150 for a family of 6, and $200 for a family of 8.
We only accept non-perishable food items and ask that you donate a gift card in place of a turkey. We cannot accept turkeys or other items that require refrigeration. Click here for a list of suggested food items.
How much should we get for our family for the December holidays?
We do not have a certain required amount but suggest you use your best judgement based on the family size. If you’d like to adopt a family personally but don’t have that much to spend, we recommend you recruit additional family members, church members or co-workers to join you! The more the merrier!
Can I donate used items for the December holidays?
Although we accept gently used items throughout the year, we do not accept donations of used goods for the holiday season.
How should the items be delivered to Families First? Should we wrap the gifts?
For Thanksgiving, we ask that you bring the items in a box, laundry basket or sturdy, reusable shopping bag. Laundry baskets and reusable shopping bags can also come in handy for our families receiving your donation after the holidays. Please try to avoid using several different grocery bags if possible.
For the December holidays, we do not require that you wrap the gifts, but if you are so inclined, we are happy to receive gifts wrapped. We ask that you deliver your gifts in large trash bags so we can ensure your items stay together. Just make sure the recipient’s name, family number and group number are clearly labeled on all bags.
Is there a size limit to how much we can bring?
For most families of less than five members, we recommend that their gifts fit into two (2) large garbage bags or less. If your family has requested large items, you may choose to purchase gift cards instead of the item itself. We will accept larger deliveries, we just prefer that most are of a more manageable size due to space constraints at our delivery location.
Can I just send gift cards?
You are more than welcome to send us gift cards. We have new families entering our programs every day who may not make the deadline for applying for assistance this holiday season. If you choose to send in gift cards for no family in particular, you can mail them to Families First AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE HOLIDAY (for both Thanksgiving and Christmas).
Can I do a toy or gift drive?
Absolutely! Many families who are unable to participate in the program still have great need, and we are able to invite them to a “Free Store” a week before the holidays to select from what we have received from organizations that conduct Toy Drives. You can also contact us to find out what our current needs are – winter coats, linens, etc.
If you are interested in Families First being the beneficiary of your organization’s toy or gift drive, please email email@example.com and we will send you the details on deadlines and delivery instructions.
Are my Adopt-A-Family donations tax deductible?
Families First is happy to acknowledge your Adopt-A-Family donations for tax purposes. However, current IRS regulations prohibit us from including a monetary value of the donation on our acknowledgement letter. We will provide a description of your donation on our letter, but in order for you to receive tax credit for your donation you must provide receipts for the items or gift cards you purchase. These receipts, attached to the acknowledgement letter that we will send to you after the holiday, can be submitted to your tax preparer. In a nutshell, if you are planning to submit your donation for tax credit, be sure to save your receipts!
All of the families have been adopted, but I still want to help. What can I do?
Volunteers are needed to help with unloading, sorting and wrapping of gifts at our home office. Click here to find out more about becoming a Families First volunteer.
We also encourage hosting a toy or gift drive.
